Sensei Eddie Spaho
Born: 1967
Grade: 2nd Dan (Nidan)
Sensei Eddie began the study of Goju-Ryu karate in 1981 at the age of fourteen (14) with
another Goju-Ryu school at the time. Sensei Eddie trained rigorously through his teens
and early adulthood to obtain his Black belt 1st Dan (Shodan) in 1995 at the age of
twenty eight (28). The closing of that Goju-Ryu school in 1995 forced Sensei Eddie to
retire from Martial arts altogether. Sensei Eddie wanted to continue his study of Goju-Ryu
Karate and it wasn’t until the year 2001 that he resumed his training after accidentally
stumbling across the IKO Group Australia headed by Shihan Tsanidis.
Sensei Eddie was initially inspired to do Karate as a means of self defence from bullying
fellow high school students. The physical and mental changes that followed his training
in the arts soon put a stop to the bullying.
Through the years, Sensei Eddie has realised that karate has not only taught him how to
defend himself but has also increased his fitness, agility and confidence in life’s
dealings. Sensei Eddie says that “in karate you never stop learning” and can draw
parallels with this claim to his everyday life.
Outside of karate, Sensei Eddie works in healthcare as a registered Nurse and often finds himself teaching
his patients the importance of exercising and staying fit. Sensei Eddie is
an assistant instructor at the Lakemba Dojo where he continues to train and teach other
students the Goju-Ryu style particularly those suffering from bullying.
